These hirachawan, also known as shallow rice bowls, are long-selling items designed by the celebrated ceramics designer Masahiro Mori. His "Shallow Rice Bowl" series won the Good Design Award in 1993 and the Long Life Design Award in 2004 since its launch in 1992. The design is based on traditional rice bowls however, they are great for serving other small dishes, snacks and desserts. The shallow depth makes it easy to hold, allows the designs to be seen and complements the contents.
